About China WTO Network

China WTO Network is a network of Chinese NGOs and the only native NGO network that pay attention to trade related issues in China, which was established in May 2005.

It currently has five core members (i.e. Action-aid International China, Oxfam Hong Kong, Gender and Development Network, Friends of Nature, and Brooks Education) and several partnerships (including Global Call to Action Against Poverty-China, Social Resource Institute, China Development Brief, Our Workers, and some other NGOs and academic institutes) in China. The five core members construct the steering committee of China WTO Network, which is the decision-making branch. China WTO Network also has a close contact with some foreign organizations, such as Focus in the Global South, Third World Network, and Transnational Institute, etc. China WTO Network has actively attended or will co-organize some activities with its partners, both native and overseas.

China WTO Network mainly focuses on the marginalized and poor groups who are negatively affected by free trade or trade liberalization. As a network of NGOs, China WTO Network aims to raise the public awareness of NGO to refer to trade-related perspectives and advocate NGOs to introduce trade analysis in their own work.

At present, China WTO Network covers a variety of trade related issues, including agricultural and non-agricultural trade (mainly animal husbandry and some export-oriented industry), Environment and Climate Change, Labor, Gender, Intellectual Property (mainly medicine justice), Investment, and WTO reform, etc.

In 2009, China WTO Network will continue to demonstrate its advantages as a network organization and strengthen its capacity building among this network. It will hold series of sharing and training activities through the cooperation with international NGOs, like workshops of capacity building and studies, the discussion meeting with ASEAN NGOs, and the next review and prospect meeting, which will provide a platform of communication and research. This platform will popularize the common knowledge of trade influence. Especially, the Review and Prospect meeting will analyze current trade negotiation and lead to the response strategy in 2010.

Meanwhile, this program will go on cooperating with local NGOs on diverse trade-related issues, which will put emphasis on the information collecting and sharing. Furthermore, China WTO Network will launch two advocacy workshops about food rights and herdsman livelihood in the background of free trade from a perspective of trade impact. In addition, this project can raise the awareness of partnerships and other NGOs and even governments, which can pay their attention to both topics that are neglected in some sense. Advocacy is an inseparable part of this program.

Finally, China WTO Network focuses on the improvement of capacity building through supporting the organizations on different issues within this network, which include the trade related issues like social gender, environment, medicine justice and labor. This cooperation can improve the capacity building about trade impact and analysis of relevant organizations.

In sum, all the relevant information will be shared on website of China WTO Network and all the related meeting will be sorted out in paper or video as the output of this program.
